There are two ponds in our community. One between Chancery and Abbott Lane, and one between Somerset Chase and Paddington Lane. They function as detention ponds, accepting storm water runoff from the Single Family Home storm sewers and from the Condo community. They allow for the orderly flow of water into the Little Miami River watershed.
The ponds, with their six fountains, also provide a pleasing treat to the eye and the ear. Several years ago, a Pond Team representing the Single Family Homes and the Condo community decided on a "natural" approach to erosion control in the ponds. Water Iris was planted and a three foot buffer of higher grass was allowed to grow on the edges of the pond. These created an eco-friendly, natural habitat for birds, small animals, insects, wading birds, water fowl, and other creatures. One of the benefits of this habitat is the abundance of dragonflies, which keep mosquitoes under control. Besides the waterfowl, who make our ponds their home and breeding ground (Mallard Ducks), the natural habitat has also become a migrating magnet for others (Hooded Mergansers and Cormorants) every spring and fall. The habitat has the added benefit of discouraging the presence of Canada Geese during the summer months.
